It's going to depend on the chicken type as some develop quicker than others. My own began laying eggs about the 5th or 6th month.

Most literature says between 18-20 weeks, but there are a few factors involved. They need to be fed a quality complete ration from the very beginning. A grower ration until they are full grown and an egg-laying ration while they are laying would be best. They need to have a place to lay the eggs. even some hay on the floor of the coop would be enough. It also depends on the breed of chicken. Some breeds are more prolific layers than others. Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks are some of the better layers. The weather has an effect too. A lot of times, my chickens will stop laying in the dead of winter. Provide them with adequate feed, fresh water, plenty of space, minimal stress (keep dogs and other predators away) and of course, make sure they are female and you should have eggs at around 20 weeks. They will be very small at first, gradually getting bigger as the chickens continue growing. Good Luck!
