use a fibregalss ready-mixed filler.

push into the (dried) hole and smooth over with wet 'n' dry afterwards

Thats for pitting.

for larger holes you'll need to dig out the rotten fibre and use matting and resin mix.

If it's just in the gel coat clean the area thoroughly so that no waxy polish is present . Wipe it over with acetone or cellulose thinners.
Then mix and reapply some more gel coat to cover the lost bit.
If you're fussy you can rub down the new gel coat to level it off applying more gel as necessary.
Finally polish it.

As per Stewpid-but instead of saran wrap (cling film in U.K.) I use wide Sellotape. It stops the gel sagging out of the chip and leaves a good finish.(no need to sand if done carefully)

gel-coat repair kits are available at auto stores and marine supply stores. inexpensive. mix the amount you need and follow the directions. if it's not provided with the kit, SaranWrap placed over your patch will give a very smooth finish.
