The cat got into the yard by jumping over our fence... cats(not her that ive seen before) but other cats ive seen back there(prior to having our dog) would jump over the top(its a 7ft fence) but i think they use the boards that hold the fence together(on the neighbors side) and walk along that then just jump over.. there are also a TON of trees at the fence line on both sides.. so thats how the cat got in....

Your dog was in your fenced yard so you are not to fault. I'm sure you are stunned, I would be if one of my dogs did that. Accidents do happen and some dogs do play rough (not vicious). As hard as it will be I think you should talk to your neighbor and let them know what happened. Don't let them blame you...like I said this was not your fault. Their cat was in your fenced yard.
However, the EASY way out would be to bury the cat and not say anything. I don't think that is right! They have a right to know and you need to not carry the guilt around. I would want to know if it happened to my cat.
Sorry about your bad morning...hope tomorrow is better!
Good Luck!
P.S. You can apoologize for the loss of their cat but you don't need to apologize for your dogs actions! It sounds like your dog just played a little to rough. Not your fault your yard is fenced. And NO you don't need to muzzle to be out in YOUR fenced yard!!! It also not your responsibilty to replace their cat!!! They should keep the cat indoors if it is the precious to them. It just as well could have been hit by a car!

I would go over to your neighbor and tell them what happened. Inform them that the cat was in your yard and the dog killed it. I would be careful offering to pay for any new cat, etc. Sometimes people say things when they are apologizing and then realize it was not the smartest thing to say, such as "I'll replace the cat.., etc" Then they get hit with other requests.
Mistakes happen, remember that there is no way to completely get the natural instincts out of out dogs. Some dogs just revert back to their hunting days and kill small animals. My jack tries to kill birds all the time and has succeeded, other times she is sweet as pie.

This dog is going to end up in animal control . Any dog that attacks animals or other dogs will normally be taken away and placed in a home with more suitable and understanding of breeds and have Secured fences or electric fences . Burying the cat will do no good because eventually they'll find out or start questioning till you crack . Best tell the truth and save you time and thinking about it . But like i said the worst thing they can do is quarrentine for 10 days. I dont know if it was in your yard .

You need to approach the neighbor before she finds out on her own and gently let her know what happened. Convey your suprise, and acknowledge that even though you can't replace her cat, you are willing to talk with her about future actions. Because the cat was on your property, it is not your fault, and she has no legal leg to stand on in regards to pressing charges. I'm really sorry about this, I know you must feel horribly.

i am sure you are upset....i would be. first...the cat came into your fenced in back yard? all you can do is tell your neighbors what happened and i dont have to tell you to say how sorry you are, because i can tell you are. it was an accident, nothing you can do...dogs will be dogs, and your dog was in your yard. just tell them how sorry you are for the loss of their cat...but their cat should NOT have been allowed to wonder outside.

I am so sorry this happened but I would go tell the neighbor
and apologize. If they want to be mean and take you to
court, I am sure you would win though. I know you feel
very bad about this as would I.
I would apologize and even offer to get them another cat,
that's just what I would do. It's up to you.
Good Luck.

It's a very sad thing, but most cities have leash laws for cats as well as dogs. Since their cat was in YOUR yard, you are not legally responsible! They should have had their cat in the house or on a leash!! Check with your City Hall to be sure they have the leash laws on cats! Sorry you went through that!!

What I would do is call a lawyer for free advice. I would have him explain to me what EXACTLY the laws are. Once you know for sure about that, then I would talk to the neighbor.
Either way, you should let them know about what happened, just know what to say when you get there about what comes afterward. Be Sincere, just have your bases covered!

Be a grown up and admit it! How did the cat get into your fenced in yard? The cat owners have a right to know their cat is dead.

You need to take responsibility for what happened. Your neighbours need to know what happened to their cat. They will be worried for the rest of their life if they don't. Sure they will ne very sad and upset now, but it's better than not knowing. And it is better to be honest and responsible, they will appreciate that. You must apologise and tell them that you are willing to pay some compensation, but before they get angry at the idea of your paying off for the life of their cat, explain that you realise money cannot make up for the cat's life, and offer to get them another cat (but next time make sure your dog gets out muzzled)!.
