I'm from California, my boyfriend works around the Sacramento area, I'm concerned about his work, latley it's been making him really depressed and I don't think it's legal for him to work soo much hours, he's only 19... his daily schedule has gone worse in this past month, he works from 5:30 am to 6 Pm and again that night at 8:30 pm to 3 Am, then goes back to work from 5:30 am and continues the schedule.
He's on salary for $1,800 a month, but I don't think that's legal it's wayy to much work for anyone, regardless of age. I have a funny feeling his boss just put him on salary so he can work extended hours with no overtime and just have the same limited amount of money. is it legal?

It may or may not be legal, but the employer can, apparently, get away with it. It your BF quit, the boss likely could get someone to replace him easily.

I am no educational snob but the best bet for your BF (and any young adult) is to save money and enroll in college or a training program to provide them with skills and expertise that are in demand - employers are more likely to treat their minions with respect when they cannot be easily replaces.

Sure its legal, he is under no obligation to stay there though. Thats the beauty of being in America. Sounds like he needs a new job. He should be able to work at Mc Donalds for the same amount of money with less hours. $1800 a month isn't that much.

It is legal, but it isn't ethical. Your BF should talk to his boss about his hours, if he gets no releif he should quit and find a new job. Before quitting he needs to document the hours that he's working so he has a good reason for leaving in the next job interview.

If he truly meets the qualifications for an exempt (salary) worker, it does not violate overtime labor laws. However, depending on what he does, it may violate OSHA safety laws. For example, OSHA does not allow you to work more than 16 hours per day if your work is classified as hazardous.

Tell your boyfriend he needs to quit this crappy job and get another one.

He needs to contact the State's Labor Board. They can guide him on what is his legal rights and the legal responsibilities of his employer. If they feel that what his employers are doing are illegal, they can guide him on how to resolve the issue.
