Probate is short for a 'Grant of Letters Probate' which is issued by a court to allow an Executor (personal representative of the deceased, named in the Will) to distribute a deceased person's assets to beneficiaries in accordance with his Will.

An Administrator is appointed by the court if there is no Will or if the Executor named in a Will is dead, or otherwise unable to act. The Administrator does the same job as an Executor: distributes the assets of the deceased to his rightful heirs.

I believe an Executor and Administrator are the same. With the possible exception that an Administrator can be named to handle things while a person is still alive and have Power of Attorney. The executor of an estate takes care of any bills left after the death of a person. They monitor the division of properties left in a will. Most times, they get a percentage of the estate for having this position. The person who is named executor is usually appointed by the deceased in their will. A court may also appoint this position if not taken care of beforehand. You can contact your local Probate Court for all the details.
