Better question, why don't you ask this in the spirituality section instead of knowingly offending an entire minority of people? If you had asked, "Why doesn't the government save our white women from marrying black men", I would have the same response.
The founding fathers were not priests. 18th century religion was more of a fact than an avocation, and just because they called themselves Christians doesn't mean they had any intentions of piety for their prosperity. What they were concerned with was freedom - not if two men or women who loved each other could receive the same rights as an opposite-sex couple.
If the Bible were the law, it would be illegal to sell shrimp or cut your hair too short in the US. However, it's not, and I would check that Constitution of yours concerning Freedom of Religion. Just because you think it's a Christian nation doesn't mean everyone else does.

Since a substantial number of the congress are closet cases, they will only talk about making it constitutionally illegal.
I'm more inclined to believe they'll make it legal to have gay sex in public restrooms than to constitutionalize a definition of marriage.

No the government shouldn't. There is a clear line between church and state. And I think that all the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Wiccan, would probably disagree that American is a Christian Nation. As a non practicing straight Catholic woman, I would think that if Americans spent more time focusing on understanding and peace then we wouldn't have so much time focusing on other people's relationships. Guess I'm probably not going to get best answer on this one : )

i don't think America is a Christian Nation. There's no establish religion mentioned or lack there-of. Only a total separation between nation and religion.
So congress can't 'protect marriage' on the bases of what you said.

Marriage is a church institution and none of the governments business. But liberals want the government to control everything. Go figure.

Dear VERY LARGE FART...
America was founded on certain principles. Maybe you should review before asking unfounded questions.
For example, America was not founded as a Christian Nation. Duh.
Ever hear of Separation of Church and State?
But hey, 2 pts.
Thanks
Duh.

No, same-gender marriage should be Constitutionally LEGAL for anyone who has read and understood the Constitution. This document is supposed to guarantee the same, equal rights for all US citizens.
(Note that those who would ban same-gender marriage would have to AMEND the Constitution to support their hatreds.)
