I would say 7 or 8 I have a nine year old who helps out a lot and well my 4 year old watches her and does what she can before she get distracted.

Just have them clean up when they are done playing with things is the best way to start. Teach them to be clean and neat at a young age and they will not be slobs when they become young adults. I reward my kids for doing a good job. But they know that if the rooms are not clean no one is going out to play or getting ice cream after dinner. This sounds great it's work but with my wife and I both working full time it is important to have a good team at home.

Once your children get in a routine of cleaning up after themselves and doing small chores it will become a habit. It's the parents that never have there kids do anything that drives me nuts. Then they are 17 and you can't ask them to help you carry the groceries in the house.

The younger the better 7 or 8 even 6 get them to be responsible at a young age and they will be responsible adults.

I would say that 8 years old. By 8 years old, the child can talk, walk, understand the reason for cleaning, and would do a good job at the work. Anything earlier then that, the kid might not do the job very well and the mother would have to redo it anyway. Also, before 8, the kid is just a kid. Let him/her just be little and not have to worry about stuff like this. On the other hand you should definetly make children under the age of 8 clean up little messes like their toys for example, but housework..? Housework is a little too much for a kid under 8. Hope this helped! good luck!

My parents started me out at 8 yrs old baby sittiing and doing yard work. However, I think once the child is old enough to understand what you are asking them to do, they should start doing chores. Things like cleaning there room, helping with dishes, helping clean the bathroom/house are all things that they can do, if they understand it. Take the time to show the childern how to do certian things, help them out a little bit until they are able to do it on there own.

p.s. the earlier the better

At five they are capable of putting their clothes away. Start there for "chores" and as for the younger set, a child at three or four years old can help you take folded towels to the bathroom cabinet, hold a dustpan, etc. Make it fun, start young, reward with fun things and they won't hem and haw when they are older.

I began training mine when they started to walk. I began with having them pick up their toys and putting their dirty clothes into the hamper. As they grew to 4 or 5 I had them helping me to make up their beds, do dishes, take out trash and vacuum. When they got to be 7 or 8 the chores that were theirs were making their bed, putting clean clothes away, and clearing the table. At about 10 they began to mow the yard and pick up after the pets, and take out the trash besides keeping their room tidy.

Children learn at an early age to pick up after themselves and this carries on as they mature. My children still make up their bed as soon as they get up nice to see after all they are now well into their 30's. and they have chosen to raise their children the same way. Teaching them accountability, responsibility, respect and love.

ASAP....I started with my first chore when I was around three (emptying the bedroom wastebaskets). Sharing in household chores gives children a feeling of importance. No matter how small the task, they need to learn the joy of contributing to the family.
