This shouldnt happen with a wooden toilet seat. I can only suggest you use machine washing powder and scrub it to see if you can restore it. Otherwise, a new seat might be needed. For mother in law stains, try antibacterial sprays or antibacterial handwashes to clean the lid and seat. They will kill all known and unknown bugs, MRSA etc., and give the bleach a rest. Dettol have wet wipes for cleaning toilet seats between more thorough cleaning. Best of luck, tell him it's his mother so it's his fault lol.

Can you buy a new one in half an hour? If so then take off the old one and throw it away and install the new one. Even if he comes home before you are done you can say that the old one was unsanitary and you are replacing it so he can finish the installation. They are quick and easy to install - just reach under the back of the seat and twist off those plastic nuts there.

Buy a cheap seat that is easy to clean (and discard it when it gets gross also). While the old one is off use that bleach to go over the top rim of the bowl because it is sure to be a mess also.

they only cost about £10 to buy a new one. I always clean my toilet seats with bleach, always have, and that's never happened to me. Strange.

If you have Ajax or Vim powder try wiping with this, I think you will need a new seat. Accidents happen , sure your husband will understand

Put a new seat on there. Open the top and look in there for damages.

need to replace it all together now. But if you were a bit more patient with your dear old mother-in-law, bless her, a simple wipe with a disinfectant wipe or cloth would have done the same as the raw bleach. How would you like to sit on there and burn your bum???? Do you never miss or your hubby????
