Most all nursery rhymes have a historical basis to them -- more than they appear. Humpty Dumpty was the same way.

"Humpty Dumpty was in fact an unusually large canon which was mounted on the protective wall of "St. Mary's Wall Church" in Colchester, England. It was intended to protect the Parliamentarian stronghold of Colchester which was in the temporarily in control of the Royalists during the period of English history, described as the English Civil War ( 1642 - 1649). A shot from a Parliamentary canon succeeded in damaging the wall underneath Humpty Dumpty causing the canon to fall to the ground. The Royalists 'all the King's men' attempted to raise Humpty Dumpty on to another part of the wall but even with the help of ' all the King's horses' failed in their task and Colchester fell to the Parliamentarians after a siege lasting eleven weeks."

The story of Humpty Dumpty is the allegorical story of King John ( brother of Richard the Lion hearted) King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta which guaranteed the citizens certain right and removed absolute power from the monarchy and its minions. this was Humpty Dumpty's great fall, and all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't restore absolute power to the monarchy again.

It means - DONT SIT ON THE WALL ^_^
The inner meaning of the poem is that nothing is certain in life. Fate happens the way it should happen and no one can change it. If something is to happen it can happen thru the simplest of the things. Like in Humpty Dumpty's case sitting on the wall.

In Alice in Wonderland, Alice meets Humpty just before his fall. They have discussion about the meaning of words. Humpty explains to Alice that when he uses words -he- decides what they mean, because he's the one using them. Humpty is also very proud, in fact he says more than once that he's proud.

So obviously the moral is 'Pride goeth before a fall'!
