Yes it is rude. I had this happen at a very nice steakhouse. I was on a date and lost track of the time.
The bus boy started sweeping under our table with a vacuum cleaner. I asked the bus boy to stop and told the waiter we got the hint and asked for some to-go boxes.
It really puts a damper on a romantic dinner, but it gave us something to laugh about later. The next time we need to eat out late, we go to that place that serves waffles or burgers !!!!

It does stir up dust and most health departments will cite a restaurant for sweeping in an area where food is uncovered. They are supposed to use an enclosed carpet sweeper in the dining area, and the finer restaurants will wait until the kitchen is closed before daily cleaning begins. But I would hardly put Chili's in the upper echelon of dining quality. 24 hr fast food restaurants have to schedule cleaning around the shift change. Food service is just like anything else - You get what you pay for.

I find it very rude myself. Unfortunately at many restaurants the servers are encouraged to do this. I myself dislike sweeping around customers, but have been told to do so by management. I don't mean at their table, but in the same room all around them. Customers have complained but generally no one cares, they just want to get the work done and get out of there. I do not agree with this attitude at all, but you do have to do what you are told at your job, or find a new one which I have done! Yeah!!!!
On another note, we have a salad bar at this restaurant and some managers actually make us scoop the ice out of the bar while customers are dining fifteen feet away. It is extremely loud to do, and nothing says time for you to leave to the paying customer as rudely as this does!

Yes This is rude- They are not suppose to sweep around your table. I was actually a manager at a rest. and we do not train people to do that- now we would train them to start cleaning after a table had left to clean up the mess at that table so the next table would not sit in a mess.. but even if another table was close by- they would ask if it was a problem.then at close they would just block off part of the dining to go ahead and clean.(and I mean after the closing and tables were still present). I would complain too!!!!

I guess I never thought of them stirring up the air but I will now...thank you.
Yes, it is INCREDIBLY rude. You wouldn't do that at home with guests at your table, would you? Of course not.
I think the problem is:
1. The employee is just doing their job and not thinking of the customers (probably more-so in low end restaurants and diners).
2. It is more important to the business to herd people through than it is to concentrate on the existing customers.
Write a letter to the manager if you don't want to face them during or after your dining experience.

No, I dont like that either. Its annoying. They should be near their clients but not being sweeping around them. We all need/want some kind of privacy when eating out at a restaurant. So yeah I think it's inappropiate. XP

The hygiene implications of this are horrific!
They are stirring up everything that has come in on peoples feet, dog dirt, bacteria, you name it, if it's on the street, it's on a restaurant floor. This dust then settles on what you are eating, it's like eating your food off of the floor.
It must be illegal to do this?

It is extremely rude! I will ask them to stop and then ask for the manager and tell them how rude I find it! They usually say that the servers are not supposed to do it.
