I live in KY and we let two acquaintances stay with us for a while. Originally it was supposed to be three or four weeks, and they wanted to set up a tent in the backyard. But they quickly took over the garage. They don't pay any rent, nor utilities, are there any specific laws about making them leave?

they asked my hubby if they could set up the tent, until they could save up money. Since they've been there, the man has gotten in trouble with the law for drug possession. It rained a coupla days, so they went to stay the weekend elsewhere, when they came back, they took down the tent and moved the bed into the garage. I just want to be sure that I do everything legal and by the book. But they CAN'T continue to stay. They throw cigs in my yard, unplug my pool filter, leave my waterhose running. I've got legal reasons to get them out, but how do I go about it? Even though they don't pay rent, do I have to evict them like they do?

Lying would be stupid. Nobody with an IQ above 60 is going to believe you can't set up a tent in your back yard. Ask them if they are still looking for another place to stay. Then inform them that your agreement was just for a few weeks. Tell them without any contribution to the household you can't let them stay much longer. Bills increase with house guests and alone time is important for a relationship/marriage (if that is who the "we" are). Tell them you will give them another week. If they refuse to leave, threaten to call the cops. If they still don't leave, actually call the cops. They are bums. The ball is totally in your court. Don't let them take advantage of you.

A couple key questions first: Do they receive mail there and do they have personnel possessions there including food and clothing. If yes is answered to any of these questions, then you will have to serve them an eviction notice through a civil court. I know, it does not make sense, but that's how it has to be done under current laws. As far as the utilities and rent go, that again is another civil issue that has to/ can be taken care of through the courts.
Since you allowed these people to stay at your residence, no crime has been committed, so filing a police report is not in the cards.
My best advice, contact an attorney and go from there.

Ask them often if they have started looking for a new place to stay. Tell them that the state will not allow tents to be set up in private back yards. Start making up things to get rid of them.

Well your house is your property and you've full rights over it. As you were the one to let them in, it's pretty much in your hand to let them out. The politeness you showed will surely be retured if they are well-mannered people. It's not quite clear if they asked you before taking over your garage ...if they did then its quite considerate of them and if not, you've helped the wrong people! Anyways goodluck....I bet there are strong laws on trespassing

Step 1. Ask them nicely to leave.

Step 2. If step 1 failed, call the cops. They are trespassing on your property. They have no lease and no legal right to be there.

Check with the city ordinance department. You may find your violating one or more city codes. That way you don't have to lie, you can just show them the notice which I am sure a city inspector would be glad to issue

Tell these people to move out, or you will call the police on them and have them removed and arrested for tresspassing.

Show some compassion and let them stay, at least until they get on their feet.

It would be cruel to ask them to leave, at this point. After all you invited them.
