I fell off of my bike and slammed my knee to the pavement. Their is a semi-deep gouge and some swelling which has gone down the past 2 1/2 days. Treating with ice, antibiotic ointment and rest, can finally sit in chair today normally(2 1/2 days after) but cannot walk down stairs(must go one at a time), going up is not normal yet but better each day(there is still pain even a little at rest). What exercises can I do to help move mobility along or should I wait a few more days, and also is there anything else i should do?

You should wait a few more days for sure. You have to give you body some time to heal. Plus you will need to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. Obviously if it gets infected you will need to see a doctor for some antibiotics. But, I don't think you will need that. I had the same thing happen to me on my mountain bike. You just need to give it some time to heal. After a few more days if it is healing nicely then I recommend some stretches for sure. Then I would try to do some bicyle like movements like sit on a chair grab the seat bring your knees in towards your body and start doing some bicycle like movements with your legs. Or better yet if you can get into a pool you can get good execise kicking and swimming without having too much pressure on your knee. Also it would be a good time to work on some upperbody strength. If you have weights then start doing bench press, arm curls, shoulder press, do some sit-ups and pull-ups. If you don't have a lot of exercise equipment then I would do things like pushups, sit-ups, and a good exercise for your triceps is to get two chairs put your legs on one chair and act like you are sittig on one but, then you are going to grab the end of the chair with your hands(palms grabing the end of the chair, palms facing away from you) and dip down. But, I would wait at least a few days before doing any of that. Just give you knee a chance to heal. If it gets worse get to a doctor but I think you will be fine. I hope this helps and take care.
