Muqtadr Al-Sadr has declared a six month ceasefire in Iraq. He says that the Mahdi Army will not attack Us forces during that time.
1) Does this mean that the surge is working?
2) Is this an opportunity to get out of Iraq?
3) Am I missing something, or is this the most important news of this day?

Yeah don, I guess that's possible. Maybe I'm just too desperate for some good news, but the article does say that the Mahdi Army is being splintered. Let me have my little fantasy here.

Pfo, Sadr has to know that he will be the power in Iraq after we leave. Even I can recognize that. So wouldn't it be smart for him to simply give us a chance to get out of there? Maybe this is an opportunity for us to regroup for the war on terror.

Clearly this shows the American forces has the terrorist organization on the run. Sadr claims he needs 6 months to re-organize his army. Now we must continue to take the fight to him.
So yes, this proves the surge is working. In fact, we need another 30,000 or 40,000 there. If one surge worked so well, add some more.

I don't like the sound of this news. Maybe he is re-grouping because the surge is working, but since he put a time frame of 6 months out there, it means he might have something planned in 6 months. Is it time to leave? Sadr's forces are a significant obstacle in Iraq. If they were to lay down their arms, it would be significant progress towards leaving. I say wait 6 months, see what happens, if they stay quiet then it's just a matter of taking care of any remaining insurgent or Al Qaeda groups. With Sadr's forces out of the picture, Iraqi forces may be able to take over more, also a scenario encouraging our departure.

It's an excellent sign, maybe Al- Sadr wants to live long enough to see tomorrow, this isn't the first time Al-Sadr has called for a ceasefire, so don't hold your breath to long, however I guess if Al-Sadr goes back on his word this time he will be exterminated (hopefully), anyways there is lot's of good news this morning on the war front and it does feel soooo good that there might just be a light at the end of the tunnel, and not an on coming train.

I hope so- any cessation in death would be very welcome.
It saddens me to hear how in the UK people aren't fully following the significance of movements with Iraq- going onto Yahoo answers, this was the first I had heard of the declared ceasefire.
Perhaps the war will help to spread long term peace and aid Iraqi citizens in gaining liberty and justice
