To be honest, PayPal is extremely insecure! I signed up around five years ago but never used it as I had soubts about it's security then. Only a few months ago, it was discovered that Hackers had stolen the details of millions of PayPal accounts. They had got names, addresses, E-Mail Adresses, Bank Account sort codes and account numbers, Credit Card account details etc. etc. of millions of people. It was not the first time and won't be the last. PayPal have been slammed on a number of ocassions for allowing scams to operate. They have allowed scammers to remove funds from peoples accounts and then tried to either fob off those that lost money or just totally ignore them. PayPal have allowed many criminals to purchase goods using other peoples accounts. When using E-Bay only purchase small items and send a "Crossed Cheque". Dealers don't mind receiving a "Crossed Cheque". If you discover a problem, you will have time to cancel the cheque or if not, it can be traced to the actual bank account holder. Don't trust any seller that insists on payments by cash, money order, money transfer, postal order only. There is a 99% chance that those are conmen and insist on these methods of payment as they cannot be traced. I haven't used E-Bay for a couple of years now but the last time I did, I spent hundreds of pounds and each transaction was paid for by cheque. Every order was sent out, some on receipt of the cheque (very trusting) and others upon the funds being cleared. Therefore, my first batch of goods started arriving only 3 days after sending the checks out and others took around 10 days to arrive. However, one item took two months.

Paypal everyones friend LOL. They used to be okay to use but now they think of themselves as Godlike and try to interfere with transactions instead of being a payment processor since ebay took them over. For instance I sold somePlaystation 3 systems and accepted payment through Paypal and was paid and shipped the items. But I could not get my money out of my account into my bank account at all because they froze accounts to make sure that items got delivered since they were such HOTT items thePlaystation 3. They had no business doing that as they are a supposed to be a money processing and transaction company not a security firm or government that freezes funds. I had to wait 3 weeks to get my money after all items were sent and I'll never use them again. Visit PaypalSucks.com to read the horror stories from lots of people.

I FELT THE SAME WAY YOU DID!
I never used it either. After signing up for ebay, then signing up for paypal, I was uneasy about all of my personal information I had given out.

It's been two years now and several transactions later and I can confirm for you that this method of payment and securement is safe. I was amazed actually at how safe it is. You should feel confidant in purchasing and being paid in this fashion.

I like paypal. It's very safe and it provides insurance in case you pay for something and don't receive it. You can indicate the tracking information on there. Just make sure you don't respond to any of the fake paypal emails asking for your information.
