I like to read:
-something that will keep my attention from the beginning.
-a current time period
-comedy, suspense, thriller, Pulizter Prize winners, or just a good book
I've read (just to give you an idea):
- 3/4 of all Dean Koontz (a little tired of him)
- Some Stephen King
- The lovely Bones
- Running with Scissors
- I'm Dating Big Bird

Guys!! I need authors so I can call the bookstore and have them hold them for me.
Thank you so much all of you. I wished I asked this question months ago!

I could give you a list of 300 books, but I'll just give you a few to start off with:
1. Magical Thinking, also by Augusten Burroughs
2. Me Talk Pretty One Day, by David Sedaris
3. Swan Song, by Robert McCammon
4. Any book by Douglas Lincoln and Preston Child, like Relic, which they wrote together, or Tyrannosaurus Rex, which Lincoln wrote by himself.
5. The Road by Corbet McCarthy. It just won the Pulitzer and it is AMAZING
6. Try Jodi Picoult. The new one out is called Nineteen Minutes, and I think if you liked The Lovely Bones (which was wonderful), you would like hers. She has written many books, so you have a lot to pick from.
7. Stephen King is my favorite author. Read Bag of Bones if you haven't, and here are the others I recommend: The Shining, The Stand, Christine, It, The Talisman, all of his books of short stories, Insomnia, and the Dark Tower series, but you have to start with Book One and end at Book 7. And even if you don't finish the series, the first four books are excellent all by themselves.
There you go!

If you like Dean Koontz, try Vince Flynn, he has a lot of great government suspense type books, also if you enjoy something a little different, yet very good, try anything by Best Selling Author Eric Jerome Dickey. Also, Dan Brown's other books, (before DaVinci Code) are very good as well. All three of these authors have kept my attention and I read them rather quickly because I just could not put them down. Hope this helps.

I love James Patterson books. I know what you mean about getting tired of an author, but the good thing about him is that he teams up with other co-authors on books and they are always different so his books are usually different too. :)
I also like:
The classic Agatha Christie mysteries
Linda Howard
Nora Roberts - only the mysteries not the romance
Dean Koontz - especially the book "Watchers"

i have recently read 3 quite funny books from the same author, the 1st one is probably the funniest, but all of them I quite enjoyed
the author is Stephen Clark and his trilogy :A Year in the Merde, Merde Actually and Merde Happens
the books are full of funny expressions and if you have any experience with French or been in France, you would enjoy reading, although it's not all 100 % as he describes it, just the way he see the French through his Brit eyes is funny.
