I live in the U.K and my husband died. How do I go about legally being known by my maiden name. Who do I need to inform?

I changed my name via a solicitor it cost twenty five pounds and all i did was go in and ask to change my name, it only took a few days to do the paper work and all i did was sign a document and it was as simple as that. you will then legally be able to use your name. but ask in the citizen advice or solicitors because you may be able to use your maiden name as you are a widow. good luck

When I got divorced I reverted straight back to my maiden name without any fuss. I had to present my degree absolute to my bank to change my name but that was about it. When I changed my name on my passport I had to send a letter with my application to confirm that I would be using my maiden name from there on.

So sorry for your loss. I never did anything to change my name back legally when I divorced - I just went back to my old name and that was that. I had never changed my passport or anything anyway cos we were only married a short time!! Good luck!

Firstly, I am really sorry to hear of your loss. You can change your name by deed poll. Its very quick and easy to do. I did mine through a solicitor. I can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't expensive. I was given a number of certified copies to send out to passport, tax and national insurance offices, as they will not accept photocopies.

Call the court house and ask them for that department and they should be able to help you.
