why don't dog owners clean up after their dogs poop?

I also owned a dog and used to clean up after it. I'm a new houseowner and have grass on both sides of my home, people walk their dogs all the time on the grass and not everyone carries a plastic bag with them! I've now put (2) PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTRE YOUR DOG signs with a big THANK YOU at the bottom(these signs are made up special cant find them in your local hardware store) some people look at the sign and cross the street while others pretend they are blind and continue to alllow their dogs poop on the grass. I've caught a few people (they come to my grass from 10 blocks away) and asked them nicely to carry a bag or walk the dog eltswhere most comply but there is still poop on my grass when i go out! Beware cameras were just installed on both sides of my house to catch the ignorant person who allows the dog to poop. Why did this have to cost me $? the signs and the cameras big bucks!!!! Why cant we all just be considerate enough for our neighbors and clean up after our dogs mess?????

Because most people are lazy idiots. Plain and simple.
We seem to be living in a "ME, ME, ME" society...where people don't seem to want to take responsibility for ANYTHING...
I live at the beach...people allow their kids to dig DEEP holes in the sand..and then leave them..the tide comes in and covers just enough of it..someone is always getting hurt stepping into these...even worse, baby sea turtles hatching sometimes fall in those holes on their way to the ocean and die..we have people who "babysit" these nests every year because people won't leave them alone otherwise.....think they're gonna do it after their dog if they aren't cleaning up after themselves?
Remember to put up "No Tresspassing" signs so that anyone you decide to "prosecute" will have been warned not to be on your property.

Well, that's not nice at all! Any considerate dog owner will pick up their dog's poops whenever possible. I am thinking that maybe your HOA can step in and do something about it if you present your case to them at the next HOA meeting. Since you have cameras installed, you have evidential proof of certain people not picking up after their dogs, which is against the law in many parts of the country. As a dog owner I can tell you that there have admittedly been a few "emergency" situations where for some reason or another I was stuck without a bag and I had no other way to pick it up, and I have always felt so tremendously guilty when that happens, but I assure you that I would never just leave my dog's poop on someone's private lawn. Psychologically speaking, though (since this is the Psychology section), do you think that some misanthropic neighbors purposely seek out your lawn as a poo target for the express reason of your signs and cameras? Sometimes, people are tempted to purposely defy signs by doing exactly the opposite of what the signs ask. This is especially true if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids and teenagers, or if you just have some annoying neighbor who thinks your signs are an eyesore and is trying to make a point, in a very childish way.

I agree with you. Here in London, I can't do a day without seeing dog/ whatever animal excretion it is. People who just let their dog poop around are inconsiderate and lazy. I would like to see what they would do if someone else's dog pooped in their garden. I assume they wouldn't take it lightly. From where you live, is it possible to get police to arrest those that do atrocious things like that? If so, I would suggest putting a type of sign suggesting that police will come and arrest/make perpetrator pay a fine for such disgusting, abominable deeds. People really need to wake up and smell the coffee. The world isn't just a toilet.

I have a theory. I think that dog owners crap on the world via their dogs. Someone I know had to regularly deal with a neighbor who would just open his door and let his dog run around the neighbor's yards to crap...this guy had a plastic bag at the ready, scooped up the dog's poop, and tied the bag around the dog's collar and sent him home with his smelly package.

You're absolutely right; if these people choose to be so liberal about the whole thing and take it easy, then why do they need to take their dog out for a walk? They could just let it poop in their own house and yard!! Hypocrites! Their pet is THEIR responsibility, not ours! Consequently they ought to do exactly what you say (i.e clean it up). As if they cared, anyway!

It disgusts me too and you shouldn't have been forced to have to install CCTV on your premises because of dirty disrespectful owners. If i were you i would watch them on your camera and then follow them home with their dogs poop in a bag and drop it on their front door and see how they feel.
I always take poop bags out with me, i even have them constantly in my hand bag and pockets from last time i took the dogs out as i always carry more than i think i need just in case.
They will also get a nice big fine if you report them with the CCTV evidence to your local council but if doing this then don't drop it on their door step first.

I think it's probably because when they walk their dog they forget to bring a bag or something to grab/store the poop. I mean, if I forgot a bag or something I'm not going to grab it with my bare hand and carry it home. That's disgusting.

But I do agree, I think someone who walks with a dog should always be ready for that, and it annoys me when I find dog poop in my front yard when my dog didn't do it.

They are just too lazy to pick it up and carry it around with them the rest of the walk around the neighborhood. What are you going to do when you catch them? Throw it back?

You made such a big deal out of it.
People are laughing at you. Take the signs down. Its just dog poop and may make your grass greener.
Your being a baby and people are calling you out on it.

You cant help where a dog poops he poops wherever he feels like, if its time for him to poop there is no "oh he can hold it".
It would be nice for people to clean up poop. But I will admit i wouldnt clean my dogs poop up either, its just poop.
It will fertilize the ground, it will ruin someones days when the step in it.
It sucks, but thats life.
Tell people to pick up something more harmful, like trash, cig butts, etc etc etc

dog mess is gross. I aint touching it. Play it as it lies. You should have spent your money on a fence instead of cameras and signs. People are so rude. Put up a no trespassing sign instead of a please clean your mess sign.
