Yes. With my first pregnancy I was so excited and wanted to go to the doc right away. They said they usually don't take appointments for a while. I am not sure why this is. It may be because all they do is get your history confirm your preg and give you vitamins. I kindof think it's becuase m/c are a lot more common than women think (often women who weren't trying do not even know they were pregnant) and they don't want to get involved until thinks become a little more viable.

Some doctors will only have you come in to confirm your pregnancy and get you set up on prenatals. Other doctors recommend a good over the counter brand and wait up to 8 weeks before having you come in at all. It really just depends on the doctor. I didn't have my first appt. until 12 weeks. I started taking my prenatals as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I had the full prenatal screening appt. I'm glad I waited because I got to see my little squirt dancing and jumping during the u/s.
It's really not uncommon. Help her find some over the counter vitamins and she'll be fine.

I found out I was pregnant just about at 5 weeks and I didn't have my first appt. till i was 10 weeks which was a grueling time since I kept doubting my pregnancy and thought I was making up the symptoms in my head. It is normal for the doc to have you wait a while, the first thing the doc asked me is when my last period was so maybe they have you come in sooner if you don't know or can't give them even a round about date.

It is common practice in some Dr.'s offices to not see you until you're out of the first trimester. Some say 8-10 weeks. I had a pap at 7 weeks and my first appt. with the actual Dr. was at 9 weeks. That way he knew he'd be able to find the baby on the ultrasound. What the office should have done though was call in a prenatal prescription to the pharmacy of your friends choice so she could have started them already. If its a busy office that could be why the appt. was so far out. Your friend needed to make sure she got to her appt. The fact that she hasn't seen a Dr. is now in her hands.

I found out when I was about 5 weeks preg and wanted to see my doc right away to get it confirmed (which my doc didnt as the home kits are more accurate than theirs apparently). Tried to book an appt asap but had to wait just over a week to get in as they were fully booked. Im suprised she hasnt wanted to go and see a doc sooner. I couldnt wait to see mine and start the ball rolling!

I didn't see the doctor until I was almost 12 weeks. I was surprised when I called and they gave me an appointment so far in advance, but this isn't uncommon. Your friend does not have to get prenatal vitamins from her doctor - she can get them from any pharmacy, health store, etc. And you don't need a due date right away (she can also calculate her due date as easily as a doctor can). If she feels like she needs to have it "confirmed" tell her to see her regular physician for a test.

Your OB/GYN usually wont want to see you until after at least 8 weeks. But you can go to your Family Dr. in the meantime and they should be able to confirm it for you and give you prenatal vitamins as well. Usually they have the free samples - so you can walk out with a handful of samples that will last for a while.
That's what I did - I haven't been able to go to my OB yet, but already received vitamins and etc.

Mine did the same thing as her's did.
In the meantime though, they told me to go to the store and get over the counter prenatal vitamins.
I think they wait until about 7-8 weeks or so (I didn't go till 10 though) incase of an early miscarriage.

Usually people don't go to the first appointment until around 8 weeks. You can get prenatal vitamins over the counter...no doctor needed.
