I am painting a 97 cavalier with 150K miles so I don't want to pay for a "showroom" paint job. It is just a spare car not worth much, but still runs good and want to keep it till the "wheels fall off". Have u heard anything about Maaco or Earl Schier??? We want to spend 250-600$. Both places have paint jobs in this range.

I work in the insurance industry. My advice is if you did want a good quality paint job, go somewhere other than Maaco. But considering your situation, I personally think Maaco would be fine. The main concern is Maaco (most of the time) does not properly remove trim pieces and will just simply clean the car and just paint everything. Please don't think I'm talking bad about Maaco, for the price I think you get a good result, and for your vehicle, like you said no reason to pay a whole lot for a vehicle that is ten years old. Good luck. I have never heard of Earl Schier so sorry I can't offer any info on them.

Both Maaco and Earl Scheib just offer quick, simple paint jobs with not too much regard to quality---as the previous poster stated, they usually don't tape off trim very well and just paint over any dents or defects unless you pay extra. A friend of mine did have his car done there but he did all the prep/body work himself and removed all the trim---turned out fairly good looking. I believe they just use single stage paint which is much cheaper to do---you just tape the car off, clean it and spray it ----not like the two-part base coat/clearcoat that is used on cars nowadays. You may want to save your money for doing mechanical repairs and just live with the way it looks.
