The desktop picture stays normal, but the icons and the bar blink (there for 5 seconds, gone for 5 seconds, etc.). It's really annoying. Could I possibly have a virus on my computer? What can I do to get rid of it?

Explorer.exe is what displays the icons and taskbar. It is set to auto- restart if closed.

So if you aren't getting a message about explorer.exe encountered problems and has to close, chances are a virus is closing it for you so that it can do its' dirty work behind the scenes.

AVG is a free virus scanner, give it a try.

Usually, when you see "Blinking" tabs, this is the way Windows tells you that you have something open, minimised and still in operation. However, your icons shouldn't blink. I don't think it's a virus but it may be some Malware that is causing it. If you have "Spybot Search and Destroy", update it and run it. The same with "AdAware". However, if you don't have them, go to www.download.com and get both "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "AdAware, they're both free, install and run them both. If you have any "Hijacks" etc., these will detect and remove them.
