If you want to see a bit of Europe but have not a lot of money, go to the eastern part of the continent. The former communist countries are still cheaper than the west.

In all countries the smaller towns are cheaper than the bigger towns and the biggest towns, (mostly the capital) is almost always the most expensive.
You can safe a lot of money by traveling the countryside rather than the capital towns.

Hostels are cheaper than hotels, and you can book in at most or all on every age. In summer you will meet mostly young people there, but in the quieter times you will notice that the average age is well above 30. (That is in Western Europe.)
Even in Bavaria where the maximum age of 26 is still in use, family groups with older members are welcome, as long as there are youngsters with the group.
Besides being cheaper, hostels have the great pro that you meet others, it is very easy to meet people who also travel.

When depend on what you want. If you want to see snow, winter is the best time.
If you want to see the big towns, (London, Paris, Rome, and so on) you can travel in winter, or early spring, or late Autumn, because most touristy things will be open round the year. (The rest of the year you can go to those towns too, but in Summer it will be hot and crowded, and even more expensive.)

The small towns and villages are the better choice when you travel in Summer, as most touristy things will close outside the season.
Season can be long, Greece has a tourist season running from March till November, or short, in Norway the season starts in June and ends in September.

Traveling around is easy by train, but if you want to see places far apart, consider the low price airlines. If you are on a real tight budget, bus lines do connect all bigger towns and many smaller places, and the bus tickets and passes are much cheaper than the train or even the cheapest flights when you include all hidden costs (like going to and from the airport.)

The cheapest way to travel to Europe is visit during Winter and early Spring. Flights are cheaper during that time Many main tourist areas will not be so touristy and is less crowded. I find if you want to travel from country to country then by train is most affordable. Around almost every train station there will be at least more than one hotel. Some cities has hostels surrounding the train stations. They are the very least expensive rooms to stay at, but you will have to share rooms and bathrroms with other travelers. It is a good way to meet people who have traveled to places that you want to travel to and can exchnage infos about the places you have seen. You have to be under the age of 35 to be able to check in.

Remember that Euro is stronger than the dollar so every Euro you spend it is about a $1.35.

I have traveled from Naple, Italy all the way to Munich, Germany by train this past summer and it was a fantastic experience. I did not stay at hostels but at decent 3 stars hotels which on average is about $100 Euro per night.

Have fun and good luck on your travels!
