2 answers, both kind of a cop out:

A.) I'm surprised at U2's longevity - 30 years with out a break up, a retirement, major solo projects that forced a member to take the cliched "time off" from the band, a line up change, a death - 30 years and it's still Larry, Adam Bono, and the Edge. I'm a fan of their whole career and I do hear some people say "I'm a fan of the older stuff", but even if one hasn't liked too many post-Joshua Tree albums, it cannot be argued against the fact that they still put out quality albums ('...Leave Behind ' is classic and some argue 'Atomic Bomb' is classic) and they are the premier live show in all mainstream music today >>>> two years after their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Like them or not, to paraphrase Jay-Z, "there's never been a [band] this good for this long".

B.) I'm always surprised when artists say they've retired. Come on. No one buys that now adays and haven't bought it since the birth of the second reunion tour.

Pat Boone recording a metal album back in the late 80s was the most shocking thing I ever saw.... or heard for that matter, and yes, I've had the unfortunate experience of listening to that album.

Dav Mustaine. he had an amazing career. He was in Metallica, the biggest thrash metal band. He got kicked out. You'd think it'd be all over for him. But no. He forms his own band, Megadeth, which becomes nearly as big as Metallica itself. You think that'd be the end. But no, he kicks out kerry king, who forms Slayer, the 3rd biggest thrash metal band.
