Some people can only feel powerful when they put someone down. That's not sociopathic that's just a coward who became a bully.
The term sociopath has broaden in the last decade, but in it's original form did not mean violent anti-social behaviour.
For a picture of a true sociopath watch the sex scenes in American Psycho. The title of the film misleads. Sociopaths seek gratification by using others, but are only interested ultimately in themselves (the mirror scene). Which is different from a psychopath who just doesn't realise that anything apart from him is real.

Bit of a witch hunt going on these days i think.
Be careful not to label people too easily (if at all) Like any classification covered by DSM this psychopath, sociopath, ASPD thing is very difficult to pin down, so much of it is subjective to convergence of circumstances.
For example a guy who exhibits little compassion for one person may have concealed compassion for say an animal, or older persons. The person he (or she ) exhibits little compassion for may remind them of an unavailable or violent parent for example, older persons may remind them of a loving grandparent. This is not sociopathy, this is a reaction which is attachment or even behaviourly constructed. There is no disfunction, just an atypical reaction.
A true sociopath (if such a thing exists) would have no compassion for anything
I think we fall into the trap of thinking that just because "science" has made up a label we need to find candidates.
Easy for a person who gets little affection from another to presume and label sociopathy, what is the alternative? less paletably that they personally are not worthy of the love ?
Big political potential for labeling and drugging into normality any who do not present as "normal" citizens these days.
Lady hawk is about right, would your boyfriend kill anything with a heart beat without compunction or is he just a bit more of a heartbreaker (possibly with a jealous streak and a temper) than you would like him to be? be honest.

Other than killing animals and fantasizing about sexual abnormalities, sociopath's generally have little compassion (that's how they can kill anything with a heartbeat, they have no compassion) They have a dual personality in some cases to stay involved in their family and seek companionship but the sociopathic part of their brain is paramount.

Coldness, lack of remorse for who he hurts, self-serving attitude, someone who laughs at violence and thinks it is funny when someone gets hit by a car, etc. Also, lots of sociopaths harmed animals as a child, according to psychologists, so if he has any stories about ripping wings off of flies or purposely killing any of his childhood pets, that could be a sign.
