I'm in the midst of reading 'World War Z,' which is brilliant. It's an "oral history" and socio-political study in the wake of a worldwide attack... by zombies.
If you haven't read anything by Neil Gaiman, do (he's easily my favourite author). 'American Gods', and the follow-up 'Ananzi Boys', are his best works to date, IMO.
If you like good fantasy epics, try George RR Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. The first book is 'A Game of Thrones.'
For a casual read, look into Christopher Moore. He starts to be a bit of a one-note writer once you read a lot of his books, but they're still pretty good fun.
If you're looking for something meatier (ie, not mindless fluff), I highly recommend 'At Swim, Two Boys' by Jamie O'Neill. Also, I loved 'The Alienist' and 'Angel of Darkness' by Caleb Carr (and if you enjoy those, try 'Forever' by Pete Hamill).
Finally, I'm guessing by your name that you're a film buff. ;-) Look for novels that favourite or classic films were based on (I recently read 'The Godfather,' and I couldn't put it down), or non-fiction about films or filmmakers (have you read 'Hitchcock/Truffaut'?).
Happy reading!

I'm reading an amzing book at the moment - The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (it's about vampire hunters but it's not your typical gore-fest). I'd also recommend two books by David Mitchell - Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green - both absolutely wonderful although completely different from each other. One final, recent favourite of mine is Gilgamesh by Joan London. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Try the Boudica series by Manda Scott, they are really good. Also a fantasy series by Sean Russel, The One Kingdom, The Isle of Battle and The Shadow Road, these really surprised me, as I didn't expect that after Eragon and Eldest I would find a fantasy series that was so good, so soon!

I just read a really good book called "You Remind Me of Me"...it tells the story of several different characters who are all connected, but jumps back and forth in perspective and time frame as the reader learns just HOW they are connected. I like books that shift between different characters' points of view I really enjoyed this.
