It depends, intravenous (in your veins) usually don't hurt at all. Intramuscular (you muscles eg. shoulder, buttox) usually hurts a tiny little bit. Mostly it's all in your head though, the anxiety and nervousness is worse than the actual injection itself. Try to relax beforehand and don't overthink it. People do it all day, little kids with illnesses do it everyday and their able to handle it, you should as well.

Needles have never been a problem for me as I give my animals shots myself, they never seem to mind as it's over so quickly. I never like getting poked with a needle but the experience is so quick and painless that it's hard to continue a phobia when you already know the simplicity of whats to come. (As I have many friends that give shots to themselves for bloodsugar or whatever)
As far as doctors go, I can say most men or women I know that are doctors are very caring people (to hence why they are doctors in the first place) and are doing what is best for you. If they think you will experience pain in a situation they will tell you. Help you find alternate methods and so on.
Some may be serious and intimitating but I suppose i don't want my doctor to be too humorous.

Ok, well, when you have a baby, there are many needles throughout that 9 months. I am not one for needles either, but really it did not hurt that much. A little pinch is all. And an epidural is a big needle that goes in your spine, and I didn't even feel more than a prick...labor hurts more than needles!! But relax, and try to meditate on something other than the shot....think about something that brings you joy. Before you know it, the nurse is done!

Depending on the kind of needle you get - they really don't hurt. And if they do, it's only for a second then it's out. I'll admit I get anxious before getting a needle, but when you actually get it...it's not that bad! My doctor has never been mean or rude.
Don't worry - it's a common phobia, you're not alone! Good luck!

I am a fairly old guy, and the needles, in the old days, were re-used, many times after being sterilised.
The joke in hospital, used to be, to whoever was giving the injection. "Would you like to take a run at it.",
Despite all of that, everybody had your best interests at heart.
Today everything is very easy, the staff are always brilliant and you really don't need to have any anxiety.
It's so easy, that I prefer an injection, to taking pain killer tablets.
I really do believe that the medical staff, feel bad, if they think, that you are distressed in any way.
Relax and just go with the flow.

I had to have a hysterectomy in 2000. I had to take charge of the situation with my surgeon - who wanted to do a bunch of testing procedures (he wanted to make absolutely sure that there wasn't some other way to deal with my "plumbing problems") but I put my foot down and told him to skip all the preliminaries baloney and go ahead with the operation (I was 45 years old at the time, premenopausal, had all the children I wanted to have etc. Let's cut the nonsense and deal with this)

Now I understand that endorsing a specific product/service is frowned upon in this forum, but I sincerely feel that Covenant Hospital in Urbana, IL is worth the risk of being scolded. This place was a wonderful place.

From the get-go, the hospital was wonderful! The clerk who handled the paperwork hand-walked me through the process. The nurse who prepped me for surgery - including needles etc. was tender and gentle. The operation took longer than expected (I was right - I needed the procedure) but the care staff was fabulous - including the needles - they were wonderfully kind and gentle and had personalities etc.

Once we got the "deal with this, Doctor" situation out of the way, my surgeon was compassionate and kind and did a fabulous job.

I was up and back to work in 2 weeks. I could have gone back sooner - but the MD wanted to make sure my stitches had really healed properly.

Bottom line. No one in the medical profession wants to hurt you. But ifyou want to be treated nicely beyond all measure - go to Covenant Hospital in Urbana Illinois! What a great place!

HI!:) My doctor tells me to count backwards from hundred (you dont have to go all the way! just until its over!) it totally works and dont look at the needle, then your fine. Also grit ur teeth! it does NOT hurt that much but i find expecting the worst a good solution too!!! Good luck and remember . . . needles are your friends!!!! I'd add a smiley at this point but smilies dont work on this page :(

Doctors are there to help you and have always treated me kindly. I've never had a problem with needles, but if you do just don't watch them stick you if you don't like it and you will barely notice it at all.
