The actual pap smear doesn't hurt - It is just a long Q-Tip so is pretty small and soft. What can hurt is the septum - that is what the doctor will use to open you up. It is more uncomfortable than anything. If you are a virgin, you can ask the doctor to use a smaller one as not to bother you as much.

It kind of depends. The Pap smear itself (when they put the spatula in and scrape some cells off your cervix), you probably won't even feel. The only thing that might "hurt" is when they put the speculum in. If you are small, and you get nervous and tense up your muscles, when they put the speculum in and start opening it, it kind of feels weird. Like, open your mouth a bit, put one finger on your top teeth and one on your bottom teeth, and try to force your jaw open a bit further than it wants to go. That's kind of how it feels...like everything's getting squished in an uncomfortable way. But it's not really pain. It just feels kind of yucky for a minute or so, then it's over.
The most important thing is to be relaxed. If you just let all your muscles go to jelly, it'll be a lot easier. Also, if you're not s*xually active, ask the doctor to use the small-sized speculum.
Don't worry........the whole thing will be over in five minutes and you'll be wondering why you worried about it so much.

If you have never had a pap smear done it can hurt. You might feel some pinching where they take the pap smear. The plus side is it shouldn't hurt for long. It is important for women to have one done every once in a while. It can help detect cancer at an early stage. I hope that this helps make you feel a little better about having one done.

The exam should not hurt. Many women describe the experience as a sensation of crowding or fullness in the vagina; however, there should be no pain. Sometimes a woman will feel discomfort, especially if she is tense.
check out the link below for great info to help you feel more at ease with this procedure

Painful No, it is uncomfortable, it can be embarrassing. However, it is something that, for the sake of your health, you must have done.
The procedure takes two minutes, at most. Usually, the doctor, knowing that you are ill at ease, will be asking you some inane question, trying to keep your mind on something more pleasant. Usually that works, and before you know it, it is done.
Just remember, the men's personal exam is just as embarrassing and uncomfortable for them.

A pap smear doesn't hurt! The key is to totally relax and not tense up at all. You're already apprehensive as it is, listening to others and their "bad" experiences will only cause you to become even more afraid.JUST RELAX!!!

no it doesn't hurt, but it just feels a little awkward. If your doctor is a woman it makes the situation easier to remember that she goes through the same thing. Best of luck!

Well yes it hurts, they have to open your vagina to take the cells with a little brush, it is bothering to be open by the artefact, but it last like a minute, and you may bleed a bit but that´s pretty much it. It is quick it is maybe a bit annoying. The best thing you can do is relax cause if you are tense your muscles in your vagina contract and you will make it worse.
Good luck! ;D
