The only thing that really went wrong here was Gonzales lying about things. Federal prosecutors have been hired and fired based on politics for as long as the United States has been a country. They know that this comes with the job. If Gonzales had just done the smart thing and said that these guys were fired for political reasons, just like what had happened in other justice departments before, there would have been no scandal.

Remember, Bill Clinton fired ALL 93 US District Attorneys. Those positions are at the pleasure of the President, and the President is well within his rights to fire any or all of them at any time.

From Washington Times, March 26, 1993

"...the White House and the Justice Department for gave pink slips to virtually all 93 U.S. attorneys, a move Senate Leaders called the "March massacre" . . . . "

The same way no one was talking about it when Clinton fired all but one of the US District Attornies back in 1993, including the one that was investigating Hillary's Whitewater deals. He gave that job to a close friend, who, first day in office, closed the investigation. Amazing how the Democratic Congress and the press didn't care about THOSE firings at all.

How come no one is talking about the fact that when a new President comes along it is typical to do an overhaul with the DAs? Usually most (if not all) get fired and the new guy puts in new....I don't get why it's a scandal now, but it isn't one every other Presidential term.

Because they were fired. Federal attorney, despite what Congress thinks, serve at the pleasure of the President. He didn't want them; they're gone.

Probably because they don't fit in with the thinking of the current administration, which is why they were fired in the 1st place.

Because their firing is exactly what the Bush administration wanted. They only want puppets in the DOJ that will do exactly as they want. Gonzalez was just Bush's latest fall guy that fell on his sword to protect the White House and Bush.

Until Bush is gone there will be no real justice in this country!

I am sure they have moved on. It's not likely they are sitting around with no work to do. And other people have probably been hired into the slots.

It's called whistling past the graveyard, and the government is great at it. They're hoping no one is really paying attention to that part of the problem. Counting on the fact that most Americans won't care and won't notice.
Plus, if they give those people their jobs back, it would basically be an admission that they were wrong and did something unethical. That's never going to happen, not with this administration.
