Okay, let's say we 'change direction' and leave Iraq, what will a democratic president, supported by a democratic congress, do to ensure that America is safe from the threat of global islamic terrorism that exists around the world? (Please don't try to argue that terrorism is not a global threat or issue.)

A fence along the border won't do it. First, it'll never really happen. You can't build a fence along the entire U.S. border. Secondly, they don't need to cross the Rio Grande, they're flying into America on first class tickets.

Democrats don't like the patriot act, they don't like us listening in on the phone calls of terrorists, they want to free everyone in Gitmo.

So let's say that the democrats now have the responsibility for keeping America safe. What will they do?

Serious answers only please.

I wish I could give you a serious answer. All I've seen is that they will chat with the terrorist and just explain how we feel and all will be fine. We will pull out of Iraq and leave them hanging to be taken over by Iran, so we will have created another major enemy and our word in the world will mean nothing. Then we will give amnesty to 20 million illegals, we will raise taxes to support all these illegals, then they will roll out their socialized medicine which will give the government total control over our health care, then with the fairness doctrine, they will finally shut down conservative talk radio, then they will take out the 2nd amendment for their safety's sake. Hillary of course wants to take companies profits and use them for her programs. That is what I've heard them say over and over. This is as serious as it gets. Which should scare the hell out of everyone.

While I am a republican, and you over exagerate some of your statements. I get you point. The dems, and the republicans too, talk about all these things that need to be done, but very few if any have given actual ideas. I can stand on my soapbox and scream all day, "We need to secure our borders, we need universal healthcare, we need to get out of Iraq." But me doing that is no different than the democrat saying the same thing, except I wasn't elected.

We hear how we need to do this things, but no real plan, not from beginning to end, what will the plan be, how will it be implemented and how will we pay for it? Don't say raise taxes because Americans will not go for it. That is the major stumbling block behind universal heathcare, we don't want taxes like in England or Canada that are 40%+ higher than what we pay here. Give me answers not rhetoric and I may vote for you, even if you are a democrat. As long as all I get is rhetoric, and false promises, I will vote for the republicans who do the same thing. At least I know a rhetoric spouting republican is spouting the same rhetoric I would be on my soap box.

Barack Obama wants to go after the terrorists on the Pakistan/Afghan border.

No matter who is next President, the US is not leaving Iraq.

I don't know the details of the Dems plans for defense, the debates have been about social issues so far.

Invading Iraq has proven to be the most disasterous foreign policy decision in America's history. As general Patraeus has said, in the long term, Iraq must seek its own political solution to the crisis there. Just what faction will end up being in power there is anyone's guess, I suppose. We will embark at withdrawing troops late this year, or early next year. This is no mystery to either party, setting aside the rhetoric.

Same as they did under Bill Clinton, ignore the problem and tell us how great everything is.
Meanwhile they'll cut military budgets and manpower, just like they did before.

among a thousand other things the Bush admin has failed to do, I would start by removing the reasons people hate us for what we do around the world.....by being honest, helpful and respectful of other people and countries.

It is simple! You quit pissing people off and grabbing their resources!

Most of the terrorist attacks in this country were carried out by US citizens.

If the Republicans had of passed the anti-terrorism bill Clinton wanted in 1996 perhaps there would be fewer!

We know Bush has no plan in Iraq, and he has no plan here!
