Matrimony is tantamount to security. If a man is not married he can easily just pack his bag and walk away.Matrimony provides the girl with a legal claim,
Matrimony is a commitment. It means that I respect you enough to share my name and my goods with you.
Matrimony creates the environment for the nest to be built.
As a man who has been married for 49 years, I can tell you that it is a great thing to wake up every day next to a wonderful woman and realize that we live in a blessed union.

By calling it a sacrament I assume you are referring to the 7 sacraments (Catholic), so here goes...
The sacrament of Matrimony goes along with Holy Orders. It is a way for people to decide what they are going to do with their lives. If you go into Holy Orders- you are acting as an image of Christ by becoming a priest, deacon, bishop, etc. If you go into Matrimony then you are establishing a bond with your spouse to uphold God's will for the church.

Hi Val X, I'm a Missouri Synod Lutheran and it is a sacrement for us too. The importance of these sacraments is that your marriage is legal in the eyes of God. If you try to take communion and you are living in sin, you are commiting a bigger sin, and if your Pastor knowingly gives it to you, he is sinning also. If you are not planning to rectify the sin, it is an even bigger sin.

it is the promise that you two make to each other to be honest loyal and trustworthy till you two die and it makes perfect sense. you are to raise your children up to be catholic and you are to try with all your help and reason to do things right and that is what it is. its also a scarament in the church and to obey the rules of the church.
