The mineralogy (chemical components) of the mantle has been proposed to be of eclogite (omphacite and pyrope garnet), peridotite (olivine and pyroxene) and dunite (olivine) composition. The "physical components" of the mantle are that of a plastic solid, which allows flow while retaining rigidity. It is believed that at the 400 km discontinuity olivine assumes the perskovite sturcture and at the 660 km discontinuity pyroxene assumes the spinel structure.
