Yesterday i was in the car with my partner and my sister, peak traffic hour, the main road was really busy with cars. And we see something lying in the road.... a small beautiful whippet. So as i though anybody would do, we slam on the hazard lights get out and see to this dog, who has been in a hit and run. She is scared witless and a bone is popping out of her leg. I sat there talking to her kindly and stroking her, my fiance took off his shirt to wrap her in.
Only 2 people stopped their cars!!!! us & another lady, everybody else kept going, nobody before us stopped, even though it it legal requirement by the law to inform the police if you have hit a dog. A dog is deemed part of a family. Nobody stopped, nobody cared. She died in my arms on that road. It was only when we got to the vets we realsied that her chest was damaged as well, it was probably kinder 4 her. Surely if you hit a dog you would stop and get a vet even if only to put her down. anybody else disgusted at that??!!!!!

sorry people need to add that the vet believed the dog had been hit straight on, most likely in the centre of a low car. a thud i am sure anyone could feel or possibly hear.

I'm not completely sure what a whippet is, but from the context i'm guessing it's a stray dog or animal? Please correct me if i'm wrong, but i'll use that meaning in my answer..
Yes, i also would be disturbed at that sight, and since i'm also a driver, i always keep a safe distance from any animals that may have found themselves on the road.
But instead of being disgusted at the fact that hardly anyone helped the whippet, i'm quite amazed by the fact that there is such a regulation stipulating animal-protection over there. From where i come from, there are no such things, and one could probably see a couple of new roadkills each day from frogs to cats to dogs, and when i mean roadkill, i mean totally flattened-to-a-pulp kind of roadkill. It's definitely not a pretty sight. Now this is something you should be disgusted about.
Therefore in my honest opinion, instead of disliking the present situation you showed us, i'd actually like your kind of atmosphere where in there is actually an initiative to protect animals from getting killed by automobiles, over my kind of place wherein any animal can be run over on sight by oncoming cars without any implications.
Look on the bright side, your place cares for animals way more than other places. And that's a really good thing. I hope i got to help you out.

This doesn't only happen in Britain. So many people are heartless towards animals. Even when they own them, a lot can't even care for them. A lot of people think animals are disposable and its simply disgusting. They never receive vet care or proper nutrition. Especially the stranger pets, like small animals (rats in particular) are misunderstood and looked at stereotypically. I remember when I was a teen and riding down a highway-type road into town, looking down at the road, and saw a tiny flat kitten as we zoomed past. Disgusting. In middle school I was in the library and somebody was talking about how they kicked and shot a cat. It took all I had not to jump on him.
From another post I made last week, mainly about rats, but it can be for any/all other animals as well:
"There a lot of people in here who are severely miseducated about rats... and probably pets in general. This scares me (as do all stupid people in large groups). There's a big difference between a wild rat and a domestic one... and even wild ones can be tamed to a certain extent if they're caught early enough (before eyes open).
For those who want to saw EWWWW OMG RAT! RATS ARE NASTY EWWWW, you should promptly go play in traffic or throw yourself off of a very high cliff (bonus points for sharp rocks at the bottom). You're too ignorant to live, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Chances are that you'll never be 100% satisfied or competant with any pet you get, because ALL pets have something disgusting about them (cat vomit/litterbox, dog poop, lizard skin, ANY disease your animal may contract, etc.). For the love and benefit of God and everybody around you, don't make comments about things you know nothing about. If you intend to volunteer your deluded, misguided opinion, at least make sure somebody has the satisfaction of beating it out of you first."

That is shocking, but I'm afraid I'm not a bit surprised. I've seen people walk past collapsed humans before - we can't even show compassion to our own species so no, I don't think dogs stand much chance on the whole. I'm glad there are some people around like you at least. Personally I'd pull over if I saw a small bird in trouble, never mind a dog, but I know most people don't care. Don't think it's just us British either, think it's the human race in general!!

I once stepped out in front of a car to protect my pet dog that had escaped the house and was about to run into a residential road.
The driver did stop and then gave me a mouthful of abuse to which i replied you saw me, you would have not have seen my dog, and what if it was a small child, some people are just beyond help.
I could have slapped him daft there and then Some people should not be allowed cars.
Well said have a star, good to know some people do care.

Hello from Canada!
In answer to your question, I don't believe that we should blame just the British population for the disgusting way that an injured dog was left on the roadway until you came along.
Here in Canada, I have experienced the same sort of behavior. Many people the world over don't care for animals or how they are treated. There are some people who treat animals in such disgusting ways; it always makes me sick.
I often ask, why bother having pets, if you don't treat them with kindness. As a young girl, I rescued a young pup from a very abusive household. He resided with us, and then my parents until he passed away of old age.

Its sickening. I did the same with a cat, it was laid in the middle of the road, clearly still alive and people were actually driving round it and carrying straight on! I stopped and picked it up and was putting it in my car but it died. I know its not a legal requirement to stop for a cat but surely people can't be that heartless? Obviously they can.

Good for you just sorry it ended the way it did !!, Yes as far as i am aware it is a legal requirement to inform the police if you hit a dog..... people are so cruel in this country they dont care about anyone or anything else but themselves, it sickens me to think that whoever did that just drove on, maybe something bad will happen them and i hope is does. As the owner of two dogs i would kill someone if they ran over them. So glad to see that someone else cares !

Not really, there are many countries where they wouldn't stop if it was a person lying in the road. And believe me that's true.
Still, the thing is, as there were two people already stopped what would be the point of anyone else stopping unless they were a vet? How many people does an injured dog need to help? Surely more would have just got in the way.
Maybe the dog was hit just before you got there and you were the first to see it.
Also you often see dead wild animals like badgers and foxes in the road, maybe people couldn't tell it was a dog so they didn't stop.
So no I am not disgusted that nobody else stopped

Sweetheart we live in a lawless, couldn't careless society. A society in which last week a wee 11 year old was gunned down in cold blood and left to die, and today a whole family gunned down in their house- and you wonder how people can be cruel to a dog?? Says it all really doesn't it- if they don't care about people they are going to care about a dog- but i am glad, and i am sure that dog was that he died being loved by you. Well done-honey.

This happens the world over, not just in Britain. If it was an Asian country the dog would probably have been run over deliberately.
Yes it's the law that the police must be informed if you hit a dog, but lets face it, most people couldn't give a poop about the law. You're very kind to stop for the dog, and if I'd been there I would have stopped too and also held up the traffic so that everyone else HAD to stop. The person responsible for the dogs death is it's owner for letting it out unattended.
