Being a true artist can drive a person off the deep end. Art is creating, an extension of one's personality. Imagine having to create for money when the inspiration is not there. Imagine having to settle for substandard work that goes against everything you believe in for the purpose of meeting a deadline demanded by your boss.
I once asked an art instructor what my chances were for making money by teaching art. She went off on an hour tirade about the monetary value system. She said an artist does not paint for money and that you will only become famous after you are dead. She said an artist is a way of life, he paints for self satisfaction and freedom of expression. EG. if a person wants to paint his garage purple with polka dots, he will do so irregardless what the neighbors or the world says.
I would not go to the extent and say that one has to cut one's ear off, but I would say that a true artist can very easily be found to be on the eccentric side.

It depends on what you mean by "mental".

I'm clearly a bit eccentric (though not quite as eccentric as the dude in my avatar) yet I make out quite well in the real world. If you mean "mental" as in a strange but fun and harmless person, I probably fit that category to some degree. But if mean someone who's truly mentally sick, then I'm not at all "mental".

Do remember folks like Vincent Van Gogh would quite likely be treated with medication in this day and age, and they would still freely create their artwork and such. Back in the 19th Century threre was no medicine to speak of, and mental treatment was positively barbaric.

vincent van gogh cut off his ear with a razor blade. not his knob as you state.
i studied gsce art and i would say, artists have to have passion for their subject. my old art teacher was a nutter and he was the best teacher i ever had, and the best friend i have ever had. i think we were just as loopy and thats why we got on.

Depression isnt saved for the artists. There seems to be tons of people with emotional difficulties that cannot draw a stick man. Everyone is an artist if you try and that is the truth.

I think so. If not - you soon will be - after seeing that being an artist does not feed you very well.

It was his ear,but mental is a bit strong,I'd rather say "eccentric" or
