I am thinking about trying out for the Sound of music, (one of the Von Trapp kids) But would I have to speak in some sort of accent?

If it doesn't say on the audition notice, then almost certainly not. It would sound strange, since this play is such an American staple anyway (even though it is set in Austria). I think the only two characters where a more Germanic accent is called for is the maid and the butler -- and from most shows I've seen, that, too, is optional.

If you are really worried, contact the theater or director. But most directors will establish a need for an accent (or other skills) in their audition notice.

The productions that I've seen and been a part of have not had the kids do accents. If anything speak 'properly' like a well brought up child. No slang, stand up straight, etc. Use your best manners and hold yourself in the way that the Von Trapp children do.

No. Although the VonTrapp kids actually spoke German, the production is in English. Everyone in the show should speak with the same accent (whatever is native to your neighborhood).

Don't worry about it for the audition. If they want you to use an accent, they'll work on it with you during rehearsals.

You learn all sorts of things in rehearsals. When our high school did "The Sound of Music", many of my classmates had to learn how to pass themselves off as nuns. :D

It depends where you do it. Some theaters make you do a british accent but a lot of the time you just stay with an american accent.
Why don't you just ask at the audition?
