Yes, Venus is closer. For example, right now (August 29, 2007):
Mars: 174,658,000 km
Venus: 45,500,000 km

The minimum and maximum distances from Earth are:
Mars: 55.7 to 401 million km
Venus: 40 to 261 million km
So, sometimes, Mars is closer. But most times, Venus is closer.

Tha'ts correct--at closest approach, Venus comes within about 27 million miles of Earth. the closest Mars gets is about 35 million miles.

We tend to think that Mars is closer, simply because we pay a lot more attention to Mars, since it's the most like Earth and might evenhave had simple life forms at one time. But Venus is actually closer on average.

It is true THAT (note spelling of a real English word there) Venus sometimes is closer than Mars. Because everything is moving, at any one time Mars may be closer to Earth than Venus. However, because of their orbits, Venus can approach Earth closer than Mars can, and Mars can get further away than Venus can.

It can be. The planets are moving in different orbits and the distances between them are always changing. Sometimes Mars is closer and sometimes Venus is closer. But the closest that Venus can ever get is closer than the closest Mars can ever get.

Venus, right now, IS much closer than Mars. The problem with observing Venus when it is close is its illuminated face is AWAY from the Earth. We only see a bright crescent.

At closest approach, Venus is closer. We're about 30 million miles from Venus, and about 40 million at closest approach to Mars.
