ALTHOUGH it is often classed as 'mental illness', clinical depression often has as many physical symptoms as mental. The feelings or emotions that are depression symptoms actually begin to cause the physical effects. How this happens is a vital part of understanding depression and the symptoms that come with it.

If you are depressed at the moment some of the following symptoms may sound familiar:

You feel miserable and sad.
You feel exhausted a lot of the time with no energy .
You feel as if even the smallest tasks are sometimes impossible.
You seldom enjoy the things that you used to enjoy-you may be off sex or food or may 'comfort eat' to excess.
You feel very anxious sometimes.

You don't want to see people or are scared to be left alone. Social activity may feel hard or impossible.

You find it difficult to think clearly.

You feel like a failure and/or feel guilty a lot of the time.

You feel a burden to others.

You sometimes feel that life isn't worth living.

You can see no future. There is a loss of hope. You feel all you've ever done is make mistakes and that's all that you ever will do.
You feel irritable or angry more than usual.

You feel you have no confidence.

You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person. You may also feel guilty sometimes about being critical of others (or even thinking critically about them).
You feel that life is unfair.

You have difficulty sleeping or wake up very early in the morning and can't sleep again. You seem to dream all night long and sometimes have disturbing dreams.

You feel that life has/is 'passing you by.'

You may have physical aches and pains which appear to have no physical cause, such as back pain.

It's this wealth of depression symptoms, and the broad scope that confuses many people as to what depression actually is. Explanations rarely cover all the symptoms, and everybody's experience is different.

I'd say use onions but.....maybe you can try watching all those sad love stories that make people cry like the notebook, a walk to remember...etc. When it comes to the sad part...don't force yourself to cry though(it won't work...maybe you'll shed a couple of tears but people look really stupid when they're forcing themself to cry.) Just relax, enjoy the movie....put yourself in the character(s) shoes and feel what he/she feels...and you might start crying.

And then when you're actually performing, BE the character...feel what she feels. When she's sad...you're sad. And if she cries when she's sad...you would cry too.

I'm not sure if this make sense though..lol

Look at a light or the sun for about 5-8 secs trying not to blink at all. Then open your eyes more widely than you usually do for 3-5 secs more. If you practise 10 times before the play, you will achieve it. You can follow this order of actions on stage without looking weird if you do these carefully.

Emotionally relating is the best...Stanislavsky's Method is the best approach to stage for your needs. Sniffle, sniffle. The book is pretty cheap and a (fairly) quick read.

I agree with those above with the onions, visine, but no way on the Tabasco...nasty...

a very small amount of vix vapor rub or any menthol vapor rub under the eyes will start the tears, but bear in mind this is a immediate result so not something to walk on stage with and as a big tub of vapor rub coming out of your pocket may look a little unprofessional i suggest placing a small amount on the end of you finger, and when starting to get emotional within your act place your head in your hands and gently rub the vapor rub under the eye. and HEY PRESTO.

If sad events in your life dont work...then think of the most sad movie you ever watched.....think of Bambis dad being killed....or relate to a sad event...think of everyone killed in Katrina, or 9/11

u must pretend there were no one else seeing u, you are all alone, you must dive into the character that u play, go into the story, feel that emotion, coz using other techniques to help u cry just for temporarily and will not make u a successful actor believe me.
