Reciprocating mass of the valvetrain is reduced by eliminating the pushrods and rockers allowing the engine to rev faster and any slack, valve float or tolerance issuses are reduced. Take a heavy book and holding it in both hands, push it out from your chest and back quickly...now take a magazine and do the same thing....less weight=faster movement.
For most applications in racing and public use, the pushrod engine is fine and holds up very well--Chevy small block and Dodge 426 Hemi are two great examples.

RE:
What makes an overhead cam engine better than pushrod engine?
I know that racing engines use OH cams, but what is it that is better about the OH cam valve train? It sure takes up a lot of room. What are the weaknesses of the pushrod valve train?

A pushrod system is slightly more complicated and heavy for the engine. Whne you think horsepower, you think about the lightest resistance the engine can give you to achieve the highest Hp. It takes more work to drive a pushrod system and mechanical failure is more evident in racing engines. So overhead cams require less force to drive them. Here's another tip, want your engine to Rev faster, trim your engine flywheel, get it done by a professional machinist. Get it balanced and put it back, You will love the way it revs after that.

Because it is an overhead cam dosent make it better... all of Chevys monster horsepower engines are the pushrod rocker arm engines. The one benefit is less moving parts with an overhead cam, and easier to remove and replace the cam, if you had too.

advantage is no pushrods to flex...cam is on the valve stem.. makes it better 4 high rpm...alows small engine to make more hp.... problems? wear and tear on cam...burns up fast whith low oil or water....poor low rpm power.....chevy small block...best motor since the ford flathead.
