What's Brewing with Caffeine
Can You Drink Your Coffee?
-- By Becky Hand, Licensed and Registered Dietician

Caffeine is a stimulant that is found in many foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, and soft drinks. Although caffeine may provide you with your morning boost, it also quickly passes through the placenta to the baby. Animal studies have shown a connection between caffeine intake and birth defects.

However, human studies have been inconclusive. The Food and Drug Administration and most health organizations recommend that pregnant women should discontinue or at least cut down on caffeine. It is okay for pregnant women to wake up and enjoy the coffee. However, a reasonable guideline for daily intake of caffeine is no more that 300 milligrams per day or 2-3 servings. The chart below shows the approximate caffeine content of various foods and beverages.

Food Item Milligrams of Caffeine
Coffee, Brewed, 8 oz. 65-135
Coffee, Instant, 8 oz. 60-100
Tea, Brewed, 8 oz. 20-110
Tea, Instant, 8 oz. 20-30
Iced Tea, 8 oz. 10-50
Mountain Dew, 1 can 55
Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, 1 can 37
Coke, Diet Coke, 1 can 31
Chocolate Milk, 8 oz. 2-8
Milk Chocolate, 1 oz. 1-15
Chocolate Chips, ¼ cup 26
Chocolate Ice Cream, ½ cup 4-5

Soda is linked to a loss of bone mass and hip fracture in women. It is also linked to a lower milk intake. Phosphoric acid, high in soda, can interfere with calcium absorption. Caffeine is to be avoided during pregnancy altogether. It also interferes with the absorption of minerals and nutrients. These problems are usually linked with drinking 3 or more sodas a day. If your nutrition is good, your calcium intake is strong, and you are a healthy individual, one or two sodas probably will not cause you or your baby health issues. All things in moderation.

I limit the intake. I have no more than 1 or 2 cans a day during my worst day. I do drink -diet caffenine free- though. If it was regular pop I probably would top it with no more than 3 or 4 a week.

Not just when you are pregnant, but it is bad for you period.

First of all it has ZERO nutritional value. Have a glass of milk, juice or water instead.
Second, it leeches phosphorus from your bones.
Third, it is loaded with processed sugar, or fake sugar
Fourth, the caffeine (which is also addictive).

I'm not 100% sure but I would say too much sugar for the little one cant be too good, plus their is no nutriton in soda, while you are pregnant you should want everything that goes into your mouth be beneficial for your baby. All the best.

I think the biggest problem is the caffeine and the extra calories. I've also heard that the carbonation depletes the calcium in your body. I personally don't think you have to quit drinking soda altogether. I've been limiting it to one or two/day.

It's the caffeine and dark soda depletes the calcium from your bones. If you really need that carbonation, try ginger ale.

nope, it won't hurt. People are just weary of them because of the sugar and caffeine in them. Myself personnaly prefer to drink regular pop with caffeine in it versus diet drinks that have the artificial sweetners in them. To me those seem more sketchy. Good Luck!

if it is not caffeinated then it is fine except that it can irritate heartburn. but anything with caffeine is going to act as a diuretic and you need all of the hydration you can get right now.
