They are all measures of market performance, but they look at different stocks.

The DJIA looks at large industrial companies. Dow Jones (publishers of the Wall Street Journal and Barrons) started with 12 companies in 1896, of which 11 have gone out of business. They last changed the composition of the DJIA in 2004, when three companies were dropped and three added. They currently have 30 companies in their listing. Originally, the stocks were equally weighted, but due to splits, etc., some stocks have a greater effect on the DJIA than others. All stocks on the DJIA are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

The NASDAQ listing is mostly of smaller publicly-traded companies, and it leads towards the tech sector somewhat. NASDAQ is the National Association of Security Dealers Automated Quotation system. All the stocks in the NASDAQ are traded over the counter, instead of on an exchange.

The S&P 1500 index is a composite developed by Standard and Poors. It attempts to show the 1500 top stocks in the market, including stocks in mutual funds, regardless of whether it's traded at an exchange or over the counter.

There are other indexes. In the US, the Wilshire, Goldman Sachs and the Russell indexes are followed. The Nikkei is an index of Japanese stocks that many US traders pay close attention to.
