Halloween used to be my favorite day. When I was younger, I always dressed up and gave out candy to the kids. It was a great time to see the neighborhood kids. These days there are so many bad things going on, that I don't open my door to anyone I don't know. It's a shame that society has gotten so bad that we are afraid to celebrate this fun day as we used to. I really miss it. :-(

Autumn is my favorite season and Halloween my favorite Holdiay. I have written several Halloween poems. Hubby and I still decorate a beautifully lit treat table in the entryway and put up lots of orange and yellow and purple lights and fiberoptic pumpkins out on the porch and sidewalk. It's bright and cheery and festive and everybody loves it.
We do too. The "newbies" are always adorable and just seeing their excitment makes it worth the hard work. And sometimes older kids will go out together in groups and they've really put a lot of work into their costumes and I appreciate that like they appreciate my decorations and treat bags.
We had a group of about 6 "Gruesome Ghoulies" once, all were giggling, several had changing voices, but all were sweet and mannerly. The 'dance hall girls' all wore braces, were shy and awkward but absolutely gorgeously made up. They were all accompanied by groups of their parents.
It saddens me that some people aren't able to enjoy such a family oriented evening where you get such joy out of the children's happiness. Our neighborhood comes alive with families out walking. Some homes are dark but lots have really made an effort to entertain and be a part of joining in the fun.
What rubbish to label Halloween as a day of evil. There's no evil around here in the hearts of the children and their families beaming and laughing and having a good time with all the sounds and lights and candy. It's more like a costume carnival around here and I hope it continues as new generations re-generate and pump new life and creativity into it.
Halloween, like any other festivity we celebrate, is what you put into it and make of it.

I turn off the porch light. Not because I have anything against the little ones who come by but because of older teenagers and, I suspect, young adults come into our neighborhood by the truck load. I'm not kidding, a couple of years ago a flatbed bobtail truck parked across the street from my house and about 30 to 40 older teens swarmed the neighborhood. The candy I'd bought for the little guys was gone in minutes.

For a while there were not may kids coming to the door. So I stopped buying candy. One year I put a table with a bowl of candy by the door and a carload of teenagers stole the whole bowl. Lucky they didn't take the table too. Now I do not answer the door or buy anymore candy. Too bad some have to ruin it for everybody. But that is what this world has come to I guess.

Kandi .. absolutely. In fact, it is the only holiday the yard is decorated (day of Holloween) with spider webs, etc....spooky music playing, all the lights on, but low. The gate is propped open to welcome the kids....The candy is kept on a table at the front door, and fortunately, 7/11 is right around the corner should more kids come than expected. And I keep a roll of quarters handy in case they prefer the quarter to the candy. This is a fun night for kids. We keep the main light on outside for their safety, we have neighborhood "patrols" to make sure the kids are safe. Sad that we have to take that into consideration, but in this day and age, where molesters run into schools to cop a feel of a little girl, there is NO safe enough!

Love Halloween. Orange lights on, headless dummy sitting in a chair by the porch, jack o lantern in his lap, store bought spider webs with pipe cleaner spiders everywhere. Nothing too scary for the wee ones. Huge bowl of the good mini bars, candy kisses, orange apple or banana for those who might want one.
Sadly, less kids every year.

I leave the porch ligh off. I hate Halloween. I do keep some candy here just in case someone catches me before dark or for family members who come anyway.

I go to my daughters and dress up I get a kick out of todays costumes. They must have over a hundred come to the door. We put costumes on all the dogs. They love it. You would have to see how we decorate the yard to believe it. Never turn out the lights. I live in a senior community so it wouldn't be any fun around here on halloween.

I drag my outdoor table out onto my driveway and set up my jack 'o lanterns and my candy bowls out there under the street lamp to give out candy.
My front porch is unsafe (from cracks in the concrete) and I can't afford to replace it yet, so I take the candy to the kids to avoid them getting hurt.
I have an old jack 'o lantern suit I made myself that keeps me more than warm enough during these two hours, so I never have a problem staying out there. And I always have my chair to sit in when I get tired.

Puts a smile on my face--a few years ago my son took his girlfriend out and I stayed at the house to pass out the candy--they came back early and his girlfriend (35) was answering the door, she would say oh you are such a pretty Barbie or guess what the little kid was and send them away crying. I told her to say -- oh how pretty -- ooo you are so scarey--not to try and name who they were. Did the same thing for a son in North Carolina--before the night was over I felt like I needed a shotgun for protection. I live in a Sr. Comlex now and no trick n treat.
