x α 1/y
x = k * 1/y
x = k / y
When x = 14, y = 9:
x = k / y
14 = k / 9
14 * 9 = k
126 = k
When x = 6, y = ?:
x = k / y
y = k / x
y = 126 / 6
y = 21

1) y is just a letter to represent a variable, that`s all.
2) If you are told that y varies as x, that is telling you that x and
y are connected by an equation.
3) If you are told, as you are in this one, that y varies inversely
as x, that is telling you that y is equal to something over x, and
that something we usually name as k, and it is called the
constant. Now, hoping that is clear, let`s have a look at your
question
"y varies inversely as x", so we write
y~1/x (had to use ~ as I do not have the variation sign), so
y = k/x, where k is a constant. You are told that when x = 14,
y = 9, so we substitute these values into the equation, so,
9 = k/14 Multiply each side by 14:
9 x 14 = k, so,
k = 126, and
y = 126/x.
Having got the relationship between x and y, we can now
find y when x = 6, by substituting x = 6 into y = 126/x, giving:
y = 126/6, so,
when x = 6, y = 21. Hope this helps, Twiggy.

y varies inversely as x => xy = constant k
when x = 9, y = 14 => (9)(14) = k or k = 126
therefore xy = 126
when x = 6 => y = 126/x = 126/6 = 21

Ratio:
9:14 = y:6
Equation:
14y = 9 * 6
14y = 54
y = 27/7
Answer: y = 27/7 or 3 6/7 when x = 6
Proof:
= 9/14 * 6
= 54/14
= 27/7 or 3 6/7
