wondering what made it smell/? Only one year old. I've had old paint before, but this is different. Any ideas?

All water based paint has qualities to it, including the base itself (water) so it can go bad and usually does if not kept in a proper place.
In Nevada I had a hard time keeping paint, I had to keep it in a cool spot, I've had paint that would gag a maggot.

Through it away. The smell is in the paint, not in the can. I made the mistake of using bad paint and it smelled for a long time.
