I'm one of those people who finds the sound of someone munching away really unpleasant, so is the music to cover this up?

Its partly to create atmosphere and also there is nothing worse than a restaurant where all you can hear is the scraping of cutlery on china. Studies have shown that people are less likely to engage in conversation if they feel they will be overheard, playing music, even at a very low level will make people feel they are more secluded than perhaps they are and encourage them to chat while they eat and order and wait for their food, this is particularly important during the early part of service when the restaurant is rather empty.

I'm not sure what the reason is for the music playing at the restaurants, I just enjoy listening to the music they play at the restaurants, plus I never hear people eating.

I agree with you and personally think it's a good idea. But I really don't think it is loud enough in some restaurants to cover up other people's loudness. I think in large part is to help create an environment and provide something when there is no conversation at the table.

Hmm never thought about that but prob is one of the reasons why. Imagine the sound of 50+people eating!! Gives an atmosphere of the type of restaurant youre dining in too though

I think its so that there aren't those awkward silences which can arise..also makes a nice atmosphere that helps you to relax.....unless its one of those restaurants that have completely the wrong music...heavy bass and thumping background music.

it fills the gaps in conversation, creates ambiance. happy music happy patrons. no one like a quiet restaurant, but people are afraid their conversation will be heard by others, so music drowns it out. many reasons to choose from.

the background music is to create ambience,or more pleasant circumstances in which to eat.to cut out the noise of people eating, especially the drongos who eat with their mouths open ,or smack their lips, you would need a siren or gong.

Wow strange question, but a good one, I never really thought of it, but i think it is to creat a nice surrounding, and somewhat to conceal the sound of people eating...

GOOD QUESTION
