Remember that yaoi is made by women for women. It is not geared towards men. Some men do enjoy it, which I've personally seen since I go to Yaoi Con every year, others snub it. The reason women tend to enjoy it is because men can be placed in threatening, graphic or sexually deviant situations and the women can enjoy it without feeling threatened (as they would if reading about a woman enduring the same things). This puts a girl at ease and she can enjoy the story for what its worth. This is the concept of yaoi, not the rule. It also helps that the guys are incredibly hot bishounen! Also, whereas yaoi is typically explicit and shounen-ai is typically romantic "boys love," in America we use the term yaoi as an umbrella term to represent all forms of guy x guy pairings. This is not true in Japan, however. Some artists may get offended if you call their work yaoi, when they term all of it now as shounen-ai. Yaoi anime is a japanese cartoon with boyxboy relationship(s). Shonen-ai is for romance mostly, and Yaoi is more extreme. It is by no means girlxgirl as that is called yuri.

Yaoi is guy x guy anime, it is more explicit than Shounen ai(boys love, another genre, but way milder). Yaoi usually appeals to teenage and older girls, rather than gay dudes.
