You may refer to my answer to your prostitution question. For the benefit of others reading, our government makes far too much money off of siezures and fines to ever legalize drugs. Further, with such a large income potential, and so many people employed to make sure that no drugs come into this country, it is certainly reasonable to assume, just by the sheer volume of drugs available, that our government must be reaping some profit off of the import and sale of illegal drugs, aside from all the siezures and fines. These are merely a bonus. Taxes on such items would never make up for this. Consider also, that a great deal of money has been spent to make sure the general population hate drugs and everyone associated with them. Politicians build their platforms on this kind of stuff, and large drug busts are used as leverage by police departments to get more tax dollars allocated to them. And it's an easy bust. What government in its right mind would give up a cash cow like that?

You can never cure a problem by creating another. You know what drugs can do and sure it is not something nice. Your observation is correct and yes others might think just like you and is not really a very bad idea, but really it is not the solution to the problem. The government must have the teeth to go against the drug dealers and politicians who are engaging in business. Illegal drugs is a multi-billion business that is why it is not easily eradicated, the govt and its people should work hand in hand to solve this problem. Stop the Users Jail the Pushers - eradicate those who earn in this business.

I agree totally.
it would:
Create a tax revenue stream.
Kick the props out from under a whole lot of troublemakers from Afghanistan to Columbia.
Create jobs.
Decrease street crime.
Guarantee safer drugs, (save lives).
It makes sense.
(Works well in the Netherlands, the pragmatic Dutch have the right idea).
However, it would decrease Governments power to oppress.
Naturally our politicians won't do it.

drug dealers are real criminals the cost of the drug industry is massive once you consider such things as:
children suffering with lack of food and parental help
medicalization of drug users
theft by drug users]
damage to properties and communities by dealers
drug users on benefits
the list is never ending....
taxing drugs and making it legalized will not outweight the cost of criminalizing it ever.
anti drug advertising, education and good parenting classes if administered affectively will go a long way to curtailing drug use, and its affects, but adequet policing would be much more affective.

personally, i don't see the difference between drugs and cigarrettes. and making them cost even more money would certainly make people stop buying them.
