Yeah! It's because when the sun hits it, so much light is being reflected back that it loses definition and detail. With the shadow on it, you can see the details a lot clearer, so you can see that it's clearly spherical. Really amazing to see!

It was cloudy here but from past eclipses I would say that your description is accurate. The 3-D image does stir ones thoughts and reveals the true beauty of the universe.

I've always noticed that effect too, and it's very impressive and beautiful. Looks just like a basketball about to fall on your head.

Yeah! I didn't realize there was going to be one. I went outside to smoke a cigerette and saw it. I took a picture to show my hubby. It was cool!
