Hi there,

I'm a fan of good old metal.

I am familiar with the big three: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. I would probably also count early Velvet Underground in that.

Any more suggested essential listening? for someone too young to have been there. (born on haloween 1985)

Prefferably more bands, but suggested albums from those three would also be good, they have quite daunting discographies. (so far my favourite Black Sabbath eras are the Tony Martin albums and early Ozzy stuff, but i am open to persuasion)

Please give reasons.

[For an idea of the rest of my tastes, my modern favourites are: Rammstein, Marilyn Masnon (pre or post Twiggy), White Zombie, Gary Numan (does he count as modern?), Jack off Jill, Sakkuth, The Dead, Metalurgy, Candy Pain, and Alchemist.]

Can you suggest albums/songs for new bands. Old bands have real daunting back catlogues and I hate just getting the best of.

Anything from Metallica before the 90's!!
Start with the album, "KILL"EM ALL!" One of the best metal albums in my book!

Testament is a great band aswell. Great Thrash Metal Band!
Try listening to the Best of Testament and if you like it...go from there!

Megadeth! They have abunch of good albums...so I'll go with one of my personal favs..."Peace Sells, But who's Buying?"

Here's a few ideas for you....

Early AC/DC, anything before 1981 and you'll be okay. Essential listening would be Back In Black and High Voltage.

Anthrax - Um.... well.... I hate to say it, but go for a "best of". A lot of their albums are hit and miss, but each has some classic songs.

Black Stone Cherry - Newer stuff, but really awesome. They're a cross between Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction, possibly the greatest hard rock album ever made.

Iommi - Yes, it's Tony Iommi from Sabbath, but with the awesome Glenn Hughes on vocals. Get the DEP Sessions and Fused. Ignore the other one. Also, if you don't have Seventh Star yet (Sabbath) it is essential.

Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, yes, it was the precursor to the fluffier 80s metal, but these guys were still young and hungry here and the music is hard and heavy.

Metallica - Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. Ignore the rest.

Skid Row - Slave to the Grind... heavy, heavy, heavy and a completely awesome album from start to finish.

what don't you try groups like
Rush, Mountain, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, KISS,

for other Black Sabbath albums,
try HEAVEN AND HELL & MOB RULES (w/ Ronnie James Dio on vocals)
BORN AGAIN (w/ Ian Gillan on vocals)
Ozzy-era Sabbath albums

for Judas Priest, ALL OF THEM! But the best are Defenders of the Faith and Painkiller (in painkiller, listen to the title track and Hell Patrol)

Iron Maiden, the best is Number of the Beast, Powerslave. After Fear of the Dark, everything turns lame

heyy my mom was born on halloween. o:

black label society - not that heavy, but zakk wylde's a crazyyy guitarist. i think you know that he has played guitar for ozzy, but i'm not sure if you know about his stuff other than that. he's one of the best guitarist out there. he actually puts his whole heart and soul into what he plays, which is kinda rare these days, so it isn't just his talent that shows. only real good musicians can bring out what's inside them the way he does it. hehe. (:

honestly, i haven't heard much of bls. sad, eh. ):

songs: in this river - dedicated to dimebag darrel (RIP dec 8 2004). it's played on piano, but i think he shows his emotion here the best.

fire it up - idk, it sounds cool. hahaha.

pantera - 90's. :D i'm not a big fan of phil, the lead vocalist of this band, but i really like dimebag darrel maybe because i mainly pay attention to the guitarists. haha. he has played some of the best guitar solos of all time (in my opinion) and real good riffs. he has an interesting unique style of playing. you should check them out.

try these albums: cowboys from hell & vulgar display of power.

floods has a kick ass solo.

system of a down - they're somewhat different from the other metal bands. serj tankian's vocals are pretty good and john dolmayan's one of my favorite drummers. their lyrics are usually very meaningful and um, yeah that's it. 8)

hope this helps...

If you're into VERY hard stuff, go to youtube and look up Acid Bath. If you're political and hate Bush, look up Ministry (especially the Rio Grande Blood album). There's also Pantera, of course.

Good eighties stuff is Skid Row -- Sebastian Bach has the best voice going.
