will it register and give me back my correct change if i use a $5 or a $10 or a $20 bill? how bout a $2? or will it take it and think its only a dollar? always wanted to know, never want to try

Most dollar bill readers will reject it. If it makes a mistake, you are just SOL (Sadly Out of Luck) as it thought your bill was a dollar, so it will not give change.
Some of the newer machines have more sophicated bill readers, but it depends on the way the machine is programmed.
If the machine does not say it will provide change for a larger bill, assume it will not.

It depends on the machine. If it's a bill it recognizes, it will give the correct change. If it doesn't recognize it, it will reject it.

The ones at the Post Office give back dollar coins.

you are assuming soda machines have the same recognition system or someone reading this knows the system for all soda machines which is unlikely... any I have used are very picky and would not accept wrong bills.
