The term 4x4 means it has four wheel drive. All four wheels pulling as verus just the two wheels on a standard pick up.
Some are designed so you can shift into four wheel drive inside the truck. Some you have to get out and lock the front hubs when shifting from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.
Under normal driving conditions you use only the rear wheels like on a standard 2 wheel drive pick up.
But when you get on ice, snow, mud, or off road where driving conditions warant you lock the front hubs in so you the front two wheels are also pulling for better traction.

a 4X4 truck has the option of all 4 tires turning to pull you through mud, snow, etc... a regular truck (2 wheel drive) only has the 2 rear tires turning to drive the vehicle. not near as good as 4X4 except for gas mileage, usually ride comfort, and initial price.

a 4X4 truck, can transfer power from the engine to all its 4 wheels, hence giving you more traction and control on rough/muddy terrain, in contrast to a regular truck, its traction will probably come from either the 2 rear wheels,or front ,depending on the model/manufacturer. visit MITSUBISHI RALLIART, look for those PAJEROS, MONTEROS,, youll have a clearer view of the performance of 4X4 vehicles

2 wheel drive has just the rear wheels to propel the truck. 4 wheel drive is the capacity for all the wheels to propel the truck--great for mud or snow--it pushes and pulls at the same time

a 4x4 pickup truck has true offroad capability (rock-crawling, towing modes, etc.), just look inside a truck and you'll notice a transfer case (either a gear shifter or knob dial with 4hi, 4lo modes, or AWD, etc.)

basically what the others said before me.
