lim (x^2-4)/ (x+2)
x-> -2

= lim (x+2) (x-2) / (x+2)
x ->-2

= lim (x-2)
x -> -2

= (-2-2)

= -4

factor the top:

x^2 - 4 = (x - 2)(x + 2)

lim(x^2 - 4)/(x + 2) = lim(x - 2)(x + 2)/(x + 2) = lim(x - 2)
so lim(x-2) as x->-2 is -4
