Both.
Laughing is sociably acceptable, while crying isn't, it sucks, but its true.

It would be a coping mechanism. A way to to mentally block the true feelings that lie deep inside.

When you're chewing on life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll
Help things turn out for the best.

Denial ? Coping ? Probably both. That's not necessarily a bad thing because sometimes we need to keep wading through until we find a better day.

It's a deflection defence mechanism. A lot of comedians hide a dark past. You deflect the true you with comedy. Hides all the nasties away in your mind for when your on your own to think about them.

It's the normal thing to do. Those who don't practice this way of coping usually end up in the mental hospital.

It's escapism, I did that before I started with the drugs, after i stopped using over 2 years ago, it has been a slow climb to get to that happy place we all dream to be at. Leting go of pain hurts.
